Should the Clan return??? [Jan. 12th, 2009|07:28 pm]

Okay, so now Drew's getting his own copy of Left 4 Dead, giving us an even number of 8 [FN] members. Technically, we can host our own versus match online now if we all played at the same time. Couple that with Kalei's group of friends whom most of us already play with and that has the potential to take the number up to 14...

That said, would anyone be up to revitalizing the clan to beef up and become an efficient zombie/human killing machine? :D

PUSH, DAMMIT! [Dec. 11th, 2008|10:03 pm]

So since a lot of us have either been playing gratuitous amounts of Left 4 Dead, or have shelved Team Fortress for a spell, this update went by unnoticed by much of the Nobra crew. Here are the biggest changes, and let's all get a few good lulz at Ken.

Latest_Update )

It looks like this will aid in resolving the turtling issues... I imagine Kalei will be very entertained with the tweak for the Spy.

Also announced but not shown in the picture, the next class update will be for the Scout. The twist though is that Valve is letting the fans decide what gets done. Valve is openly admitting that with the recent class tweaks, they've become a bit useless for anything other than blitzkrieg offenses en masse, and they're looking to the fans to address the biggest issues and how to make the scout usable in maps "like Dustbowl and Goldrush" per Valve. It will be interesting to see how this pans out.

Speaking of Scouts... Dos, I can't find your name on my friends list at Steam... Everything okay? Or did you change your name and end up having me delete you from my list by accident?

One year later... [Sep. 23rd, 2008|06:38 pm]

Well, on October 10, it would be. But it is for me since I played the beta in September last year. Either way, I felt that I needed to put in my opinion on it since I haven't played it in several months, and why that is. In addition, I suppose you could say this forum isn't entirely dead.

I have some different thoughts on the game since my first review of it from this post. However, they mainly evolve around one element, which is the gameplay. Everything else stayed the same for me, which is not a bad thing.

For me, I think the reason why I felt the gameplay changed was because of the "Achievements," feature, which leads to unlockable weapons. I see the reasoning behind it, such as prolonging the game itself and adding variety to a player's tactics due to the traits of the new weapons. However, it did the opposite for me. I suppose as a 10+ year fan of this series, I'm just used to having everything available to me, no need to choose weapon layout or grinding to get the unlocks. Now, I understand that some of the achievements are team-oriented, which is fine, but I felt that for the most part, the others require you to do unproductive tasks that can be irritable on a public server, leading them to be attainable by farming or whatever term MMO players use these days. Speaking of, I think the implementation of more RPG elements (Unlocks in this case, both in earning them and using their different traits) brings it off balance for me since I look for more of the FPS element with subtle hint of RPG in this type of game; then again, I can't really comment on RPGs in general since I play more of the Action and FPS genre. So, as with this short essay, take it with a grain of salt.

Now, I know I'm basing this "one year review," off mainly nostalgic value, but I'm not bashing the game completely. I do appreciate the active custom map and mod community out there. In my opinion, it was this element that kept the Team Fortress series fresh. For example, promoting different gametypes such as CTF variants, VIP/Escort, sport maps, etc. I think that's important for the game, and it's good that the game is continuing to prosper.

Overall, Team Fortress 2 is still pretty good and I can see why it has a decent fan base. However, as a long time fan and someone with different expectations, it's not really much of an interest of mine anymore. Of course, I'll still play it occasionally, but again, it's not comparable to the past games I played consistently in my high school days. On the other hand, I'll be more than glad to put on the Scout costume again if we get something going on. :)

Wow, a new era of Team Fortress 2 has begun...

While I'm personally not keen on the grinding/farming and left-behind potential that for one thing drew me to cancel my WoW account within a few months, I'm sure tempted to actually freeze the exam revision for a moment and get back into playing TF2 briefly, mainly to see if I can have fun getting new Pyro records before the first wave of one-class mania dies down (honestly, why didn't they at least wait till they'd prepared at least two classes update sets before releasing it?)

Best bit of update for me: Heavy and Demoman speech updates. Looks like I'm gonna have to run GCFscape once again.

So, thoughts on the latest progression? Oh, and for those who've tried it out, how's Goldrush?
